Department of Geography and Tourism

The Department invites you to study Bachelor’s degree study programme of Geography! (Click for more information)

The Department of Geography was established in 1945. After this, several other geographic profile departments were established and later merged into one. In 2000 the Department of Geography was reorganised into General and Regional Geography departments. The Department of Regional Geography prepared Geography Undergraduates in full-time and extramural studies. The department also prepared Master and Undergraduate Tourism students. In 2000 the Department of Regional Geography started to prepare Tourism Management students. After two years the programme was developed further with the addition of such subjects as Tourism Marketing and Tourism Theory and Strategy. The length of practices in tourism agencies was also prolonged to five weeks. Once finished with their studies, the students were (and still are) awarded not only with Natural Sciences Undergraduate degree, secondary school Geography teacher qualification, but also with Tourism Management qualification. On January 1, 2013 the Department of General Geography and the Department of Social Geography and Tourism were merged to form the Department of Geography and Tourism.

The following higher education institutions are among our permanent Erasmus programme partners: the University of Krakow (Poland), Wroclaw University (Poland), Torun University (Poland), University in Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic), University of Aberdeen (Great Britain), Huelva University (Spain), Lisbon University (Portugal), Eskisehir Osmangazi University (Turkey). Each year our staff give lectures in the above mentioned universities or consult foreign Erasmus students, who come to LEU according to exchange programmes.

The year of 2008 was exceptional in terms of foreign teacher and student mobility. Being a partner of an Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP), the Department of Social Geography and Tourism organised and implemented an intensive European programme “Europe’s socio-cultural borders - inherited perceptions and the modern landscapes” in cooperation with other foreign universities on March 15-26, 2008. The programme was led by Prof. S.Stanaitis and Assoc. Prof. M. Krevs from the University of Ljubljana. In 2008 9 teachers and 23 students participated in the scheme. This was the first programme of this kind among all Lithuanian higher education institutions that implement the study programmes of geography over the last several years. LEU teachers and students were the first representatives from Eastern Europe who joined the programme.
