FACULTIES AND INSTITUTES

Faculty of Science and Technology

The faculties of Natural Sciences and Geography were established in 1945. In 1952 the faculties were merged into a single Faculty of Natural Sciences-Geography. In 1994 the faculty was reorganised and renamed Faculty of Natural Sciences. Then it had 6 departments: Botany, Chemistry, General Geography, Regional Geography, Home Economics and Zoology. In 1997 the faculty was moved to a newly established educational-laboratory university block. The new lecture halls and laboratories improved the conditions for teaching and performing research. In 2012 the Faculty of Natural Sciences was restructured and 4 departments were formed out of the previous 6: Biology and Natural Science Education; Chemistry and Technological Education; General Geography; Social Geography and Tourism. On January 1 2013 the faculty was merged with the Faculty of Physics and Technology and the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technologies to form the present Faculty of Science and Technology. The new faculty also houses the Greenhouse and Institute for Scientific Research.
The faculty cooperates with a number of foreign institutions, such as University of South Bohemia (Czech Republic), University of Huelva (Spain), University of Aberdeen (UK), Daugavpils University (Latvia), University of Wroclaw (Poland), Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal) to name but a few.
